What Does an ABA Therapist Do?
ABA therapists play a crucial role in the delivery of ABA therapy. They are responsible for conducting assessments, developing treatment plans, and implementing interventions. The process begins with a comprehensive assessment to identify the child's strengths, needs, and areas for improvement. Based on the assessment, the therapist creates an individualized treatment plan that outlines specific goals and strategies.
The therapist then works directly with the child to teach new skills and reduce challenging behaviors. This involves using various ABA techniques, such as Discrete Trial Training (DTT) and Natural Environment Teaching (NET), to provide structured and effective learning opportunities. The therapist also collects data on the child's progress and makes adjustments to the treatment plan as needed.
The Training and Certification of ABA Therapists
Becoming an ABA therapist requires specialized training and certification. The most recognized credentials in the field are the Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and the Registered Behavior Technician (RBT). BCBAs are responsible for overseeing and designing ABA programs, while RBTs implement the programs under the supervision of a BCBA.
To become a BCBA, individuals must complete a graduate-level program in behavior analysis, gain supervised experience, and pass a certification exam. RBTs must complete a training course, pass a competency assessment, and adhere to ongoing supervision requirements. Both BCBAs and RBTs are required to follow ethical guidelines and engage in continuing education to maintain their certification.
